My '02 had a similar problem, and it did happen on a cold night. First I lost 2nd into 3rd, then rapidly lost above 1st. Ended up being some nylon gear(s), but in my case, the Dodge guy warrantied it. Cummins with an auto. But, I'm thinking over the years that Chrysler tranmissions haven't been noted for durability, beyond the torqueflight 727. My '96 trans finally went at about 250K. Both cummins to auto 3/4 ton 4x4.
Good luck. Hope its something simple and inexpensive. When it gets to the auto tranny, the Haynes manual pretty much throws it hands up after the filter and recommends someone far better than me. I stink up the joint on auto.
