If he still kept the 6 volt coil the points burn up prematurely cuz they are drawing/switching toooooooo much current plus the coil will get toooooooo hot. Do as Bob n the others mentioned and add an external voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast Resistor (around 1.5 to 1.85 ohms or so) or get a 12 volt coil so the points current is back in line and YES the coil polarity needs to match the battery so its more efficient, if + gnd + to distributor if - gnd - to distributor.
