I'm pretty sure the push rod problem developed due to a previous owners inability to adjust the valves. They were that loose it looks like some of them were set with a ruler, about 1/4"+ gap on a couple. I have not raised the compression ratio, it just that the readings seem rather high to me. Supposedly the previous owner had someone rebuild the head and everything else looks reasonably decent up there. The compression range comes from doing several tests on the engine at different times. Sometimes the readings were down to 150psi, and one of the recent ones reached ~180psi. Many thanks, tractorsam
