Yes, the oil in the air cleaner does matter. It is what the dirt sticks to as it is pulled through the mesh. If you didn't already, take the air cleaner off and soak it overnight in a bucket of kerosene or diesel fuel. Have enough in the bucket to cover the large diameter part if it. Next morning work the air filter up and down like a butter churn until the dirt is all out of the mesh inside. Fill the oil cup just up to the mark on the side of the cup, don't overfill it. When the engine runs, intake vacuum will suck some oil up onto the mesh. Air passing over the mesh will leave the dirt stuck to the oil. Just like those high-priced K&N filters that some folks put on their race cars. Overfilling will cause a little oil to get sucked into the engine, making it smoke. BTDT
