Hi Jay, Indeed if your designing combustion equipment you very well use net BTU values or you will underdesign the equipment. Using your example, you would need to eat 1-1/2 candy bars if the total requirement was 300 calories needed as the net calories of the candy bar was only 200 net calories per candy bar for whatever reason. 1.5x200=300 As soon as any oil gets exposed to the atmosphere it starts gathering moisture content.
