Weather Patterns - 2004 vs. 1944

Last nite had an elderly couple we know came over for dinner. Have not seen them in a while. During the course of the discussion he was asking about the U-pick/I-work operation. Told him about the efforts which lead to the weather. He indicated that in today's world the weather is to unpredictable and he wouldn't even attempt to farm now. He indicated that in his youth (40's, 50's) the weather was much more predictable. What is your experience?
