Thanks for all the tips. I did some more research and learned a bit about alternators. I replaced the device mentioned above with simple 12volt 15 amp indicator lamp. I went from field terminal to lamp and from lamp to ignition switch on circuit. Fortunately I already had a hole in the dash with a chrome cover and the lamp fit right there. Now when I turn on the switch the lamp lights. At about 800 RPM the alternator kicks in, the lamp goes out and ammeter reads normal. After that RPM doesn't matter.
