The pump is the only connection between the engine and the hydraulic system. The pump has a seal on both ends of its shaft. The front has a drive gear on it that meshes with the engine's cam gear. (which can be seen looking into the mounting hole for the pump/distributor combination. The front seal is either an O-ring type, or a conventional steel shell lip seal. Often the shaft is worn enough to require a speedy sleeve repair. If you are moderately skilled you can disassemble the pump and replace the seal. If not there are new pumps available for big bucks that fix the issue, or have the seal replaced at a hydraulic specialty shop. Jim
