it SHOULD be a 6.9, but yeah, they get swapped out a lot. If you cant find or read the decal on the valve cover, look at the relay for the glow-plugs, at the rear drivers side of the intake manifold. If it is a weird looking cylindrical pipe-threaded gizmo, thats a 6.9. If it is a plastic box-like contraption (sometimes still under a form-fitting plastic shield) bolted to the manifold, thats a 7.3.
You can also take off a handy-to-reach head bolt. 6.9s have 7/16 diamtere bolts, 7.3s are 1/2 inch.
