I was just thinking, with the temperatures regularly in the upper 90's or so here lately in Nebraska, about some stories related to hot weather.
I recall some years ago during my racing days, we were in a 200 lap race on a 1/2 mile dirt track on a 100 degree afternoon. The pits were in the infield. There was also a pond in the infield. My driver didn't do it, but as soon as the checkered flag dropped a half dozen cars skipped the pits and went sailing out by the pond. The drivers bailed out and jumped into the pond, drivers suits and all.
They must have been eying the pond for the last fourth of the race.
Another time, I believe it was 1987 or 1988, we went to a NASCAR race at Talledega on a 105 degree day. (As spectators). It was so hot the fire extinguisher blew up in Stirling Marlin's car. The seats in the stands were stamped steel, and if you stood up during the race you'd be wise to lay your program on your seat. Otherwise you'd burn your butt when you sat back down. Smart people carried trigger bottles of water and sprayed each other down during the race.

In the rural area he grew up in, the highlight of the week was Saturday when many people took a break from their work to go to town. It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership,
