Put your test light on your coil "+" terminal with ignition on and if it lights up the points are open, when the points close the light should go off. This test can be done while cranking the engine over or turning it by hand a few revolutions. If your test light stays on that means the points are not making contact (closing) with each other. If the light stays off that means they are not opening.
When the points are closed it creates a ground and allows current to flow thru the points to the ground without any resistance so it's easier for the current to travel thru the points than it is to travel thru the test light which has resistance and that is why the light goes out when the points are closed. When the points open the current travels thru the only circuit which is the test light and it lights up.
