My guess is that either your drive does not have a pin to keep it locked in the engaged position or if it does have one it does not work.
That type of drives relies on the engine starting to get the drive back to the home position. When the starter is first engaged the armature starts to spin up before the drive starts to turn. That causes the drive to be moved down the helix to engage the ring gear. When it hits the end of its travel it begins to turn with the armature. If the starter is not turning fast enough, any time the engine fires the ring gear will cause the drive to spin faster than the armature and the drive will move back up the helix disengaging it from the ring gear. To avoid this problem a drive with a locking pin that is spring loaded so that when the drive reaches the end of the helix the pin is pushed in and prevents the drive from moving back up the helix. The pin is released by centrifugal force when the drive is spinning fast enough for the weight of the pin to overcome the force of the spring and releases it from its position in the helix.
