I"m going to say he fried it as well. What year is it? Adjusting the bands is pretty simple in the hydraulically governed ones. Might be worth a shot, you never know. There are a fair number of guys with the first-gen Cummins trucks running hy-guard. It seems to be a little "stickier" (makes the clutches hold better) than ATF. Since you say you had no Dexron, I"m going to guess it"s an older one. The type 7176/"ATF+" fluids don"t last as long as it did. All you need to adjust the bands is an 8-pt, 5/16 inch socket, and a torque wrench that will read 72 inch-pounds. Which is equal to 6 ft-lbs. To adjust the line pressure you just need a 3/16 Allen wrench, get a $5 set, because you will need to modify it. Chances are the line pressure was a little low due to wear. It calls for 1 PSI per MPH at the test port, but a little (yes just a little) extra doesn't hurt.
