All of what you are asking, depends on some specifics, that you need to determine, on your own. You need to know what population you want to plant your corn at, and what amount of the type fertilizer you use to side-dress, you want to apply. the answer is to calibrate. Pick a set of gears for the planter close to the planned population. Put some seed in the hopper, and turn the wheel, a certain # of turns. Count the seed dropped, per foot of row, and see if it is what you want (do the math to convert to acre population). Same way for the side dresser, only weight the fertilizer that drops out.
