You may be lucky and only have to remove the speed transmission cover if it is not in external linkage. You are talking about the three speed transmission I take it. Couple different things happen under there. Loose or broken off bolts holding shift rail is most likely. There is a bridge available to help support that mechanism. Also, some of the shift cams would allow roller to come out of the end, not likely if you have other two gears though.
