Hello - I think the outer ball bearing needs to be replaced on my M's right rear axle. The service manual seems to indicate that it's necessary to remove the 3/4" cap screw and bull gear retainer washer that hold the axle to the bull gear (which of course means removing the rear frame cover). You then remove the axle and carrier as an assembly, remove the outer bearing retainer cap and press the shaft out by applying presssure to the inside end of the shaft. The outer bearing comes out with the shaft. Anyone with experience on this type of repair have tips or gotchas? I had hoped I could get the bearing out by removing the wheel and the bearing retainer cap, but maybe I should bite the bullet and (while I have it all apart) replace the inner bearing as well. Can the tractor safely be jacked up and/or supported by the rear frame (transmission housing), or would that be likely to punch a hole? Thanks!
