Check at the BATTERY when shes just setting there NOT running a good battery ought to read around 12.6 volts subject to temperature and its state of charge. If running and hooked to a good alternator it should rise from at least 13 to 14.5 or so and over depending on RPM, battery condition, belt tightness and pulley sizes, and the alternator and its voltage regulator BUT IT NEEDS TO RISE IN VOLTAGE TO INDICATE CHARGING
For an ammeter to effectivley register the current into CHARGING the battery or out of DISCHARGING the battery, the battery (often where big cable attaches to starter switch) must be connected to the SUPPLY side of the ammeter while the output of the alternator, plus loads likes lights and ignition, must be connectted over on the other LOAD side of the meter. Ive seen guys mistakenly wire the alternator to the battery side and that way the ammeter dont register its charging.
