Your buyer is trash talking. While scrap is not at the same level it was in the early summer of 2008, it has recovered from its lows sustained several months later.
I don't scrap cars but I have heard that fluids, tires, and gas tanks have to be removed. Prices will vary depending on your location. Metal going overseas, and delivered to recyclers located on the coasts, will pay more. You need to call the buyer at several yards. Don't get your quote from the guy operating the scales. He is always instructed to lowball.
You should also compare your quotes with people in your area who do scrap. That would include salvage yards, more commonly known as junkyards. Find out what they are getting to deliver auto residue and how they prep their loads.
