You've got the right idea, sorta. Donaldson has gone through several more generations of design since those were made, but the idea is still the same as those high-falutin' household vacuum cleaners with tanks on 'em instead of bags.
A focused cyclonic action keeps the air moving toward the conventional filter, but allows the heavier stuff (chaff, coarse heavy dust . . .) to fall into the jar. That's the stuff that can clog up the conventional part of the filter in short order, and can be the very devil to clean out.
So, on the sorta part, it may do a little but not a lot to reduce the fine stuff introduced to the regular filter, but is more to trap the coarse stuff that would clog the filter and starve your motor for air.
