Ammeter shows slight charge at engine idle or wide open. Shows high charged when switched to do so. Question is when the lights are turned on it shows a dramatic discharge; is this normal or even with the lights on should the ammeter indicate a positive charge?
The ammeter should show a positive charge even with the lights on. You may need to adjust that third brush in the generator, but also, the high/low charge function should be disabled if you are using a regulator. The high/low charge is to be used only with a cut-out relay, which is different than a regulator.
