1941 Farmall A. The LEFT rear is leaking, such that the rim is getting quite oily and the wheel is also getting oily. I have the rear wheels, rims and tires off. I think there could be only 3 sources for a leak: 1) the left hand shaft, leaking out of the bearing cover, 2) the axle or 3) the pan. A couple of months ago, I removed the pan and its gaskets, cleaned up the mating surfaces, cut a new gasket and replace the pan. In looking at the pan, after removing the wheel, I see a pretty good leak from the left side of the pan. The axle and the shaft seem to have very LITTLE leaking. I know I tightened up the pan machine screws well, so my conclusion is that the pan may NOT BE FLAT ON ITS MATING SURFACE. Do you agree? I will remove the pan and check. I did NOT check for flat when I did the work on it previously. If it IS out of flat, what about using some gasket maker silicone liberally on that area and then replace and tighten? Thanks, Tom
