David. If there is no end to end movement of the steering wheel shaft I wouldn't touch those bearings. 90% of the time free steering wheel travel is caused by 2 woodruff keys on the vertical shaft in the steering box. The gear inside is keyed to that shaft and the steering control arm is keyed to that shaft. Those two keys being in poor condition can give over one full turn at the steering wheel.
