Richard, the only way to tell for sure is to measure the coils primary resistance between its lil + and - terminals, and if its in the at least 2.5 to around 3.5 ohms range, its fine for the straight full 12 volts use NO BALLAST REQUIRED. If a coil and points ignition system is ran at more then the designed for current (around 4 amps max) the coil runs hot and degrades and the points burn up prematurely. Many off the shelf 12 volt automotive coils will work fine UNLESS they were for autos that used various sizes of Ballast Resistors. The start on 12 and run on 6 volt thing you mentioned was used on some tractors and autos, but it required some sort of Ballast By Pass circuitry to work. John T
