Oil in puddles leads me to think that the valve cover gasket is leaking. That amount of oil should not come past the sparkplug threads/gasket unless the cylinder was literally "drowning" in oil. To verify, remove the sparkplugs & THOUROUGHLY clean the gasket seating surface. Dig out all the old gaskets someone else left behind. Use the end of a smaller mill file (it is hard & sharp) to dig & scratch around to get down to bare metal. Find the correct spark plug thread tap & clean the threads in the head; they get carboned up & you think the plug is tightened properly but it is not sealed at the gasket. If you do not have a tap, take an old sparkplug & hacksaw 3-4 grooves at a right angle to the the threads. take the old gasket off & you now have your own tap!
