There's probably a groove worn on the shaft of the drive gear in your hydraulic pump. The seal gets brittle from age. It could have an oring. Case/IH has kits to repair these pumps. If you don't feel comfortable doing the rebuild. Case/IH can probably rebuild it. You never want to run a hydraulic pump without oil. It will ruin the pump since the hydraulic oil lubricates the internal parts of pump as well. Just about the same as an engine without oil. Speedi-sleeves are available to cover the groove worn into the shaft. One more thing when doing it yourself you need to have the work bench clean as a pin & all pump parts cleaned with a good cleaner. Hal
