What Bigdog says - one step at a time so I won't comment on your coil test. I will mention that you should polarize the genny right after you put the new battery in. It won't affect cranking, and it won't affect starting, but when those two are OK, you might forget you didn't flash it and spend a lot of time chasing down genny problems.
