You are right-on in what you say about GL5 and brass. I switched the oil in the transmission of my 2000 Nissan from GL4 to GL2-GL5. Within two days, the syncros did not 'grab' properly. Gear grinding was obvious unless I shifted very slowly. Changing to GL2-GL4 cured the problem, but it took many weeks for the problem to completely go away. My mechaninc pointed out to me that GL5 can be a culprit - especially in Japanese vehicles. It seems they use lots of brass in their syncros.
