5th gear is different then all the other gears in the transmision. It is a gear you do not want to grind while putting in gear. Unlike the other gears that are just a standard type gear that meshes with the one below. 5th gear actually ingages by moving over the input shaft. Here is a photo of the 4th and 5th sliding gear. As you can see if you grind the gears you can do the same thing as stripping out a phillips head screw. Could also be some of the things others have mentioned. or all of the above. Hope this helps.
