This is a great forum. My understanding on oil comes from 'classic' British bikes. They used non-detergent oil before they had oil filters. The swarf was separated out in a sludge trap (usually in the crank), or simply settled in the oil tank. When an oil filter was added, detergent oil was used to carry the dirt around until it got to the filter. The motors seem to last a lot longer with detergent oils. The problem with a motor without a sludge trap and non-detergent oil is that the muck settles out where ever the oil flow slows down i.e. the head. The trouble with using detergent oil in a dirty engine is that a blob a crud could come loose and block up an oil way with universally bad results.
