Bought an 826 about a week ago. The key switch seemed to need replacement as you had to turn it to just the right position for it to turn on. A couple days ago a friend and I were getting ready to remove the cab from it. As he turned on the key to back it out of the shed, smoke started pouring out from under the dash. We quickly removed the dash panel and unhooked the batteries, so damage was limited to the right-hand dash wiring harness. It looks like the fire started at the key switch, as it is pretty well melted. Could a bad key switch cause such a fire? The tractor is equipped with a Delco DN alternator with external regulator, and I think those regulators were wired to the key switch somehow, could a bad regulator be a cause? With what Case-IH charges for wiring harnesses, I can't burn up a brand new one.
