The people who wrote the manual knew what they were doing, all right. I"M the idiot. I was, of course, looking at the wrong diagram, the one for Models B and C. The cut-away view for Super A in the manual does not show the left side. But the shaft comes down at an angle like it does on B and C. So, I thought there would be a universal joint. My mistake, not theirs. Even so, I WAS reading the correct procedure; and "the steering gear unit can be overhauled without removing the assembly from the tractor." The overhaul procedure also involves renewing the worm bushing and, of course, the seal thereunto. The procedure DOES describe removing the sector and shaft; perhaps this is what Wayne removed. These must be removed so that the pre-sized bushing and the spring-loaded seal can be renewed. I am fairly certain renewing these bushing will take care of at least some of the problem (excepting, of course, extraordinary wear or broken parts). One final note: to avoid bruising the seals, the manual recommends using a tin sleeve or shim stock when installing the worm shaft, and again when installing the steering gear housing to base. Good luck, Wayne, and keep us posted!
