M Front Wheels

I am painting my M and have gotten to the front wheels. I removed the 3 lugs and proceded to remove the wheel. I had a heck of a time getting the rim and tire over the hub. I am worried once I get everything painted that I will screw up the paint job both on the rim and hub. Is there a trick to getting the rim and tire over the hub a little easier? Also, can you mount the rim on the outside of the hub? Thanks!
