OT Small but a real challenge

I am a carpenter for Kohlls Pharmacy in Omaha. They have a division that does home modifications so handicapped/elderly can stay in their homes! I was asked to build this gate at the top of a stairs because the husband had fallen down the stairs three times, once taking his wife with him! Built it last week in the evenings, installed it Tuesday morning. Boss tells me 'someone' will go back and stain it in place-kinda hope its not me, as that is something I don't like doing...!

Some details, if interested. Made a router jig to connect the top rail to the end verticals

Spaced out the balusters, screwed and glued them to try to keep it square, then filled the gaps

Turned out to be a real challenge!

Glad you can help keep the handicapped and
elderly in their homes, sometimes that means
the world to them when things can otherwise
look bleak. Kudos Greg

THE MAIN help to older persons is handrails; don't see them, unless that's one way down the left hand side. Handrails on both sides all the way up to the top would be a great help.

My thoughts exactly. My Son installed hand rails on the stair way to the basement, and they do come in handy, painted them bright RED so it is easy to see and catches your eye for safety.Hand rails are an absolute necessity for any one ,regardless of age, just one slip or trip unsupported and it might be pain and suffering or worse, death. It is cheap insurance for health, just like 3 foot doors in all rooms for when people get older for walkers or wheelchairs.

You mean he fell just walking by the stairwell??? I could understand if he lost it on the first step dowm. Between weak leg strength, one leg has to hold up 100% of the body weight for a moment. His sense of balance is probably compromised also. But the gate looks fantastic. As long as it will stay there when he falls against it. It should do the job. Great craftsmanship. gobble

Nice job! That is exactly the gate I need to build to keep the dogs upstairs. I assume yours hinges out over the stairs? We have a handrail that comes up to the rh post and a half wall with light switches on the left side so I have to put some thought into that yet. What you made is almost exactly what I have in mind. Hope mine turns out half that nice.

Looks like nice work and joinery! I had to do one of these 10 years ago, impromptu for a family member, just 1" D4s white pine, square picket style, interior of the house was mostly clear stained pine, was real careful on where/how I fastened as I knew it would come down one day after his wife passed away, she was the one this gate protected from falling down the stairs. When done, had a nice meal with a her husband a bomber pilot and veteran of WWII, he really appreciated the work and the quick installation of same, as I took measurements and built it off site. He handed me some money, which I tried to refuse, but he would not hear of it LOL !

You sir are an accomplished carpenter. Very well done and having taken pictures of it you can reminisce when you choose.

This gate swings away from the steps-not over-as it was more secure this way! I put an 'L' shaped stop, attached to the post! She says they never go downstairs, so handrails were never in the discussion! Yes, he did not make the corner and fell down! The bedroom hall doorway is 4' away from the stair opening, so to get into the living room you make a quick 90 degree turn, and with balance issues down you can go!

Good job you! Its too bad you have to hinge it on
the end of a free standing fence rather than having
a wall or something. But you gotta do what you
gotta do. Ed will. Oliver bc
