Rock sifter weights for tractor (pics)

Hey folks.

I got a gravel sifter on a kinda sorta good deal involving a DC welder.

It had a set of cast weights along a conveyor belt used to separate rocks from the stream hung from a 1 1/4" solid shaft.

I have been pulling logs with my 8N and have trouble keeping the front end down at times so....

I robbed the weights from the machine along with the shaft and fabricated a bracket out of 2'x1/4 angle and bolted it to the bumper.

The weights rotate on the shaft and can be swung up to access the front ball hitch.

Total weight is about a hundred pounds but I think it might help a bit.

Comments welcome.

I think that you will find that the cantilevered weight will bend the top bar on your bumper.

I hang a half dozen 60lb. IHC suitcase weights on the front of mine when I use the jib pole and it works well w/o bending anything.

I don't think you will like them if they bounce up against the grill which looks like it can happen on a bad bump unless they are restrained in the down position.

(quoted from post at 13:28:20 03/27/15) I don't think you will like them if they bounce up against the grill which looks like it can happen on a bad bump unless they are restrained in the down position.

Agreed had a system similar to that on a Ford 1210 and had to secure them in the down position for that exact reason.

I may have to figure out some kind of way to secure them from pivoting. I really only need the weight for moving heavy logs.

Kiss your grill AND the bumper goodbye! They are gonna bounce like heck and bend the crap out of the grill and bumper mount... Just sayin'...

I you are having trouble with the front end coming up quit pulling with the 3pt and use the draw bar. That will help most. I can't believe you can pull enough to get problems with the front end being light if you are using the draw bar. The front end will take a beating with that set up. Like said need to tie them down with a solid fastener.

When you front end lifts off, all the weight of the tractor is on the rear wheels giving you more traction. My Jubilee has a hitch attached on the bottom of the rear axle. Pull from there and you will have less tendency to lift front end. And you may find you also have less traction to pull the log. So it's a balancing act.

The more you extend the weights in front of the front axle, the more good you will do holding the front end down. However you go far enough with the front weight, you also remove weight from the rear wheels. Many don't understand the idea of weight transfer, Instead they want to add ballast to tires.

Looks like a nice set-up as long as the bracket is strong enough to hold the torque. I don't see the grill getting dented except in free fall.

Hello Brad Buchanan,

They Look as good as if they came with the vehicle. If you paint them red, they will blend right in!
Nice job,

Guido.
