310 in a 77 running bad

Last fall I took out a good running 77 engine and got a 310 gas bolted in. The 310 is stock with a rebuilt head and came out of a 1850. It starts and idles good but seems to lean out when I crack the throttle. With about 1/2 choke I can crack the throttle and it will spin up like it should. Without the choke it stumbles hard. The carb has a new accelerator diaphragm in it and it has a number 4.0 jet underneath the float bowl cover, is that the main jet? The carb didn't come with the engine as the original was kept by the person I bought the engine from. Vacuum advance is hooked up and its timed at idle rpm. Maybe I should a different carb?

No fuel pump - bigger seat, flows good into bowl
77 flywheel, plate and starter

Sure sounds like it is starving for fuel. Another carburetor is a good place to start. Simpler than trying to drill out the one on it.

Good. May have to keep experimenting to get the right "fit" . I have a friend that builds engines. Also does "tuning" work for customers. Recently had a customer have an Oliver that would stumble on accelerating. Tried several things to on it. Finally got one of the carburetors I had just to try it. Ran great. Just because a carburetor will bolt up don't mean it will "work" .

I tried a 2 1/8 Zenith and that worked better. But it isn't a good match to the manifold. Then I learned it had trouble with RPMs, like it had no governor. I think the trouble is me, LOL, because I didn't set up the carb to the throttle lever in wide open position.

I have to admit its been awhile since I messed with throttle linkage and carbs etc. Never had a tractor with vacuum advance either but that part seems okay. So tonight I'll have to redo the throttle linkage and see if I get the governor working with the Zenith on. Then go through the Marvel carb again and see if there is something plugged in it. The Zenith is probably a better carb though. Its a brush puller with 16.9 x 38 radials on it.
