NATPA Division 5. Low Numbers

Not hard to miss, not much competition in Div 5. Why? Restrictive engine rules. If you guys want more entries loosen the engine rules! Went to Richmond Ky. Baddest Antique in world pull. There were 30 in a class from 3.5 mph 6. 8. And 12 mph. Why. Not money. Paid 50 percent. Engines. You could run a 320 or a 425 Waukesha in a Oliver. Red Diamond or 466 in a 460 560 IHC. Do anything to a Moline or JD. No rpm checks. Just speed board. Please NATPA if you want to stay, think about changing. Also year needs to be upped to 1971. On another note thanks for 2 top cut class. Good decision! I just pull with you-all once a year, but appreciate what you do for the sport. Thanks Vic Simpson.

The president of NATPA tried to open up Div 5 but some members stopped the effort, you can lead a jacka@@ to water but you can't make it drink.

But, I want to spend $40,000 on a 2t tractor to have a brand name and ego to match!

Politically incorrect. Thank u.

I heard, when u go to those meetings, don't ever go unprepared.
You must have a shop rag with you at all times.
when you go shaking hands with high rollers, your hand may-will have social lubricant on it from them for keeping their personal economy from slipping away from them by keeping things the way they have been.
I said it. Shoot me.

Drfinatly a fun pull vs tough competition and I like pulling and competing , sure any pull and club can and will have issues but over all u can't argue with the quality that shows up from all over when a Usap style pull is put on , natpa is in a box fit for them n that's fine by me but it's totally killing them off n i agree with rules but it's got to be for the better of any club not chosen few

No rpm check as in checking every tractor after every pull. Get noticeable over and you will get checked! ! That "threat" (being embarrassed as one of few getting checked) is enough for the majority to stay within reason.

Div. 5 is about gone if you don't get up to date with rest of the world of pulling. I was also at the Blue Grass Pull there was 39 tractors in the best antique in the world on Sat. About half of them where red RD and 466 deals and Oliver with 320 in them and MMs that ran like no tomorrow. Good pull enjoyed by all. They had over 900 hooks in two days.

When you look at pulls being put on around the country: both by local clubs or "promoters" you see a large number of these using USAP type rules. I view that as a huge endorsement of the USAP program. That is especially impressive when you take into consideration that John and the crew have not traveled across the country to promote it. Let me add: I joined NATPA shortly after they organized. I "un-joined" about a year later. I have also experience with their program. (Nuff said ). I have been an avid supporter of USAP since they started. Rules that keep things simple and has classes for most everyone. Those that want to spend the money to go fast as well as those pulling on a budget.

I didn't see a single tractor checked for rpm at Waterloo or Lincoln. It sounded like everyone was behaving pretty well. Saying that I am for rpm limits. Anyone should be unless they have a death wish! Exploding flywheels are bad news. I have seen it happen. Saying that I would like to see div 5 opened up and allow more engines to make a class where the nasty stuff can run without a speed limit.

At Sigourney They had 96 in the 5000 lb 4 mph class. In the 5500 there were 98. Again at 4 mph. They run pretty much NATPA rules but this year allowed 30 % over on RPMs. Find the right class and payout and you don't need speed to have a great pull.

More correctly stated is that NATPA DIV 2 through 4 preaty much run Sigourney's rules. Sigourney predates NATPA and two of the founding "fathers" of Sigourney's pull were on the original NATPA rules commitee.

Your fun fact for the day :).

If you have to spend 40k to compete in 2t you aren't much of a puller. I have placed in the top 3 four of my last 6 natpa 2t hooks with a tractor that I could put on a feed grinder and I don't have $2500 in it. The other two hooks were a fourth and a fifth.

Guess the proper way for me to have stated it should have been "they run pretty much the SAME rules as NATPA". Wasn't trying to take anything away from the Sigourney group. They put on one heck of a good pull. My point was though that you can have great pulls that run speed limits and still have the big numbers like Sigourney did.

I like your response Brutus. I realistically can understand up to 5000 on a 2t and have fun and still be useable. Tires, rims, hitch and wheelie bars can wrap a puller up close to half that 5g. But that's 2t.
I think in the last natpa effort for div 5 rule changes was a noble attempt.
Some newer tractors are fine by me.
There was a photo on Facebook, of a g, that had 24x32s.
Why not open up a big tire class?
Engine rules are one thing, but pullers always love a good tire.

Maybe wrong on exact cubic in. But is the next motor bigger than a 320. You will hear more about them.

Next one bigger is a 330. I had a chance to buy some of those new and in the crate. $15,000 each range. I think you're referring to the model 135. Similar era engine with that type of cid.

Why not run div 5 true antiques then add a sepeeate div 5 open so to speak that opens it up for the rds and others. Just stick to the same rules rpms and such.

To add to my previous comment. The NTPA was in the same situation in the super stock class with diesels vs alcohol in the same class. Their numbers was dropping off fast loosing a lot of Diesel tractors. Once they seperated the two now its back to an even playing field.

Good idea. But the big numbers are in the 8 mph class. Is about 50 percent driver with the speed cone set sbout 2/3 track.
