Ford NAA with sherman trans

I just acquired a low hour '53 NAA with step-up/step-down Sherman trans installed. In step-down mode is this thing a capable puller at say 3100#? I noticed that the standard first gear is relatively high - 3.6 mph.

Thanks

Many variables must be calculated into that equation. Tire size, track, sled, competition tire size, speed limits or no speed limits, etc... you will get different options from folks based on where they are located and local rules. May or may not be relavent to your area. I know you're looking for a yes or no answer but,it's not that simple. Locally: pulling 28" tires against 38" is not generally successfull. 38" tires on an NAA makes it quite fast, even in underdrive. May be hard to develop enough horsepower at low rpm. Just my thoughts.

our club thought of setting up a pull for 8n's and the like but didn't have a sled that they could move .

To clarify...I don't expect it to be anything great, kind of wondering if it will move the sled too. I suppose at 3100# (don't think it will go 2600#) I'd be pulling against Farmall A's and B's. Regardless I'll try it out in a few weeks and see how it goes.

This 8N can move the sled...

yea, and that's what we wanted , just need a sled like that . we have a lot of 8n's and the like at some pulls

We have a NAA with the Sherman transmission. We pulled it for years and did real well with it in the 3000-3500 pound classes. Used low-1st on dirt and standard-1 on blacktop. Have 13.6 tires on it with a good overhauled stock engine in it. Good luck!

My friend John has a Massey Ferguson 50. It pulls in 3rd with 16.9 34 on a clay track. First at Princeton in. NATPA Division 3. But has gotten at least one ring gear.
