Carb suggestion

I have a 46 A that has been modified. The engine is a .045 oversized bore with the pistons installed with less 1/2 inch from top of block. It has a stock head for a 46 with .050 removed and stock cam. It also has a cold manifold and full 2.5 in exhaust with no muffler. It currently runs a stock 53 carb but it doesn't want to idle low without load. Any suggestions appreciated.

That tractor does not have any mod that would make it do what you say on a stock 53 carb. If you change to a 71 all you will be doing is changing to a carb with no internal problems.(I assume) Throttle bore size is identicle on both. That tractor should idle down perfectly with the 53 carb and unless you have a dyno to verify, you probably won't see/feel any hp change by going to a 71. You obviously have either an internal carb problem or needles are not set correctly or a governor problem. If you need a rebuilt 71 I have one. Or I can rebuild your 53. I can also tell you how to correctly set your idle/load needles. I just did an unstyled "A" for a customer who bought it modified about like yours and seller told him it ran the way it does because of the hp cam /pistons etc. BS! It would not hardly unload itself off trailer without popping ,slobering surging etc. Had original 18 carb. When I got done it started/run/accelerated/and idled down like a kitten. Throttle bushings shot and someone had ground off 1/8" off top and bottom of throttle disc....??/yea, that's what I said...probably some expert tractor puller secret we all should follow. Only time it would get any fuel was to suck gulps off the load nozzle and then surge until gov. would shut it back down but had NO idle function at all with that mush of a vacuum leak. My e-mail is open. Feel free to contact me.
