Hey guys

I have a 51 jd g and am thinking about making it a puller. My question is how much work goes into putting 7" pistons in it? I am sure will have to bore it and resleeve it. Any head bolts have to be moved or anything really durastic like that? I pull in div 2 so dont plan on stroking it, but if I do decide to do something with the crank how much stroke can you cram in there with out cutting hole in back of main case?

You can go 8.75" on the stroke with JD A rods and not cut the back of the case out. You may have to grind on the back of the rod caps some and shorten the rod bolts and with the stroke/rod combo you will have to grind the top of the case and notch the cam. I don't have much experience with shorter stroke than that so someone else maybe can help there.
 
Why not bore it to 6.375 and as stated go 8.75 stroke. With good ignition, some head and carb work you would have a nice running 90hp G. You can usually figure 10hp per 1000lb of pull weight at 3.5 mph so plenty for div. 2.
 
I have a 1950 A JD bored and stroked 515 cid ready to pull. includes weights. Would U consider a trade. Had a 51 G that I restored and sold and I'm sorry I did. I don't pull anymore. Puller was my brothers. He passed away.
 
I would consider a trade however my G doesnt run, bought it from a scrap yard. Someone gutted the rear end, cut everything off even with the case inside. Needs a new carb, rear tires and front tires as well. I would have left it alone if I would have known the rear end was gutted, but I talked them down to a lower price so I guess at least I didnt get totaly screwed. So because of all that there is no way I have enough money to put with the G to trade for an A. If anyone knows of a late G parts tractor I would be intrested in that.
 
That was a drug tractor.There was a bunch that came out of Mexico awhile back with gutted rear ends. They cut the axles off and welded them so they wouldn't come out. No gears left in it. We ended up with one also but bought it that way for the rest of the tractor. Also, you can usually only get a 6 3/8's bore in a standard block. A heavy duty one you can do 6 1/2 but to go bigger you need an aftermarket one.
 
Yeah found that out after I got it home to see if I coi ld get it running since it was free. Once we found out that it was gutted we drug it oit of the shop and covered all holes and its just sitting there now.

Wichita ks area is where I am at. Been talking to darwin gingerich about parts now just trying to come up with money for them. I will have as much in parts as I paid for rest of tractor. Thought if I could find a parts tractor for cheap that would be way to go since I have all the engine parts and its not stuck.


On a little different topic should I forget making the g into a puller, I also have a 48 A. They are lighter and have almost as much power to start with. Hard to pass up the lugging power of a 7" or bigger stroke though.
 
Darwin is a good guy to deal with. He should have everything you need also. I think he bought a bunch of those drug G's at one time too. A's as pullers are ok but I'll take a G any day just because I guess. Depends on the weight classes you want to pull in also. Mine without to much cutting up will weigh at 4660 with me on it. We have one that can get down to 4200 with no weights and no bling hanging anywhere.
 
I spent many a night in Andover, it is a good stopping point between Iowa and the panhandle.
 
Thats where I pull also. Sometimes I do 7000 and it handles it well. At that weight your usually allowed bigger tires so if your doing 5000 with smaller tires your at a disadvantage in the heavier classes.
 
You can't do it in the tractor nor should you try it yourself. Contact Josh Blackburn in MI. He can do a pulling grind on it and put the proper clearance grind on it at the same time. Don't have his number handy.
