pulling tires and rims

We pull a IH 1066 in the stock classes up here in eastern Canada. I recently purchased a pair of Firestone 23 degree radial tires size 20.8x42. I bought some step up rims which are 18 inches wide. Would it be advantageous to widen these rims to say 24 inches or should i leave them at 18 inches? Thanks Kent

I would think that because the tires were designed for 18" rims, the you should stay with that size. My opinion is that 24" is way to wide for that tire size.

20 inches is perfect to make straight sidewalls, for the 20.8,the jury is mixed on wider, some use wider, but the tire gets shorter. Too extreme on anything causes unwanted and unneeded problems,20" works well.Your tires face looks flat now,in my opinion that is what you want.Air pressure is a huge value to making tires work well, you have to find the sweet spot on pressure.soft track, soft tire, hard track harder tire is the old stand by on the air,but what your set up likes is trial and error.Nice looking ride.

Thanks Guys. I appreciate the opinions and advice. Its a lot of work to cut and widen for 2 inches. I might stick to the 18 inches for now. thanks kent

I don't think rim width affects radials as much as bias tires. Those sidewalls are a lot more flexible. I'd just leave them alone, and play with tire pressure to get the tread flat.

Seems to me that if you can get the tread laying pretty flat you can run enough tire pressure to keep it from squatting,(which lowers your hitch point), and it helps stiffen up the tread to keep it from laying back. gm
