There's an unstyled D near here with a 428 ford v-8 that makes 500+ HP & has been tractor pulling for 40 years this year, never once had to put a wrench to the original tranny, rearend etc. the chains are NOT an issue believe me. Google Green Goat, or search YouTube. Engine is mounted sideways & goes through the original 1st reduction gear. Don Dufner in Buxton ND. This year he added Nitrous Oxide (at least 100hp hit) & still no issues.

The JD D's are a weird little tractor. They are so short, very few of them have turning brakes, there is almost no place to hang weights, it's difficult to put on a advantageous hitch, they are too heavy for the power they have and the list goes on. Dang, I love my D's. I stretched out my wheelbase, spent time building a good hitch, cut off a bunch of weight, put in the largest sprockets on the rear axle's, run 16.9 X 28 tires and tuned it up for more power. And now around here it's a winner. I pull in second gear when I drop the weight to 4990. It'll buzz the speed alarm (3.5 MPH) in second but not in first. I never had any problems with the chains. The D's came with one of three sprocket sizes. I bought the largest ones and put them in in an evening. I'm a huge fan of the weird D's
JD D on a few pulls

The same guy I mentioned below pulls a regular unstyled D in 5500 & 6500 improved around here & wins about 1/2 the time, always in the top 3-4 out of a dozen plus tractors. It's named Big Daddy. No brakes & all stock chassis except the engine has a few tweaks & a short drawbar. Runs it in 2nd.
