John Deere A front tires

My 1950 JD A has 6.50-16 front tires. My local pulling club allows a 16 inch drawbar height using the original drawbar. my problem is that with the drawbar flipped over its too high and with it flipped the other way its about an inch and a half low. Does anyone know of a place to get cheap replacement tires of some sort that will lower my front end just a little ?

We put 4:00x15 tires on narrow rims on our G. We did this by taking a narrow 15" rims and cutting out the centers and doing the same on the G's rims. Weld the G's centers to the narrow rims. It gives the tractor a lot better stance. My question is why not ad a spacer under the drawbar? You would still be using the original set up. Also, If you didn't want to do this, do a little looking around. There are a lot of tractor rims that are on smaller tractors that will fit. The bolt pattern is pretty much standard on a most of older tractors.

If you do the math, I think you will find you need a bigger change in diameter to get the change at the drawbar you want, around

(8 foot / 2 foot)* 1-1/2 inches = 6 inches or 1 foot reduction in diameter of the front wheel.

Easier to adjust or shim your drawbar.

Good luck

I moved the drawbar to the top bar instead of between the bars and made a flat holdown with two bolts, works great.

Could you get away with adding a hole in the draw bar and running it backwards so it sticks out straight with no dog leg to it? You'd loose a few inches of length.

I never thought of that but our rules require min 24 inches from
the center of the rear axle to the hook point. I ll have to
measure and see if I have enough to do that.

I've never tried this idea, so I don't know if it will work or what problems will be created. Someone else has probably tried it already and knows how it will work.

If your "A" has a Roll-O-Matic front end, the knees move up and down about 5 inches to each other. You could try slipping the gear engagement in the front end to raise or lower the front end by an inch or two. The cast stops on the center housing should restrict the knee travel so the gears don't slip out of engagement. Move the knees through their travel by hand to be sure.

That alone won't move the draw bar height by much (1/4 of the change at the front?) but it might be used with other adjustments to get closer to the mark?

Older A"S had a straight drawbar on the end which might also be about the right height. I have also loosened all the bolts that hold the drawbar yoke to the tractor and shimmed the back two bolts down with washers to change the height. Back tire pressure makes a big difference also.

If you're using a clevis another trick might be to shim it up with washers on the top side of the draw bar.

Looks like you need to contact 1965lonewolf who posted he's just looking for a wider tire. Perhaps he might sell you his tires and rims. He posted on the 15th above.
