Building a 49 John Deere A questions

I have a 49 JD A and want to get more pulling power and not spending tons of money. Right now as far as I know it is stock. I bought a power block here recently and am trying to figure out everthing else I want to do. The block is going to need to be bored to 6.125 which should clean it up. Here are the questions I have.

What pistions would you guys suggest? Dome or Not? And Where?
Cam info? What to grind and where?
What would you guys suggest other than the block and cam to do?
Or does any one have any used parts? Like Head or Crank.

By far the simplest, and least expensive approach is to call Bob at Triple G and get a set of G pistons from him. THe advantage is the simplicity and the cost. The downside is that you won"t be able to stroke and they are heavy.

If you want to stroke it or a little more kick, consider something like this. Weigh about 3 pounds and you can make the rods longer. More cost, but more power.

Have the carb redone and have it modified it may not make a great deal of diffrence right know but as you change things it will make alot moore of a diffrence. Im sure you will be like everyone else and eventualy catch the bug.The modified carb wont hurt a thing if done right can only help and as far as the cam unless you are doing something else you wont tell a diffrence and if you wont to use G pistions just find a good used set and save the added money from the new one's and put it some where else. A good used set of pistion's will be just as good as the new ones!

Thanks for the compliments. I need to get some udpates on there to show the new stuff.

Stroker kits, W-9 overbore kit, M pistons (thanks dblair), US B, JD H, and some of the billet stuff.

There's a variety of them. Pretty sure on the 6.125PB ones they are 1.7CH with a 0.750 dome.

I've got some that 6.125" dia and are 2.309" CH with 0.750" dome. Also have some 5.75's with almost an inch of dome - have used them in an unstyled with no stroke. If I don't have them, I can make whatever you need. ALL of them have to have rod mods.

I sent some CAD drawings off to a couple of foundries last week to see about getting some 10:1 pistons made without modifying the rods. The short ones will make more HP, but the long pistons would be easier to install.

From what I have seen, what you are asking is not possible, unless of course you are going stone boat pulling. You need to get an Oliver, Farmall, Ford or Allis to avoid spending a ton of money.

I Just dont want to sink 10 grand into it. Just some money to get it to pull with the other tractors in my area. I just want some input of ideas from other people.

125 over pb pistons from tripple g and murphys rockers will make you compete guarenteed thats what i ran last year only used this set up for half the season and took 4th in points at ne club and 3rd at another this year im having jdb puller grind my cam i had the 140 thousandths taken out of the carb and going to have a valve job and a little porting done i hope to be on top this year which i dont think will be a problem with your setup i would run 14.9 tires get your ground speed going unless you are going to pull like a 6 mph class then id go with 15.5's and gear up
