A few years ago (about 15) I had an 830 JD Rice Special in my shop for a low power concern. Another mechanic had rebuilt the engine, was rebored, new bearings, head was redone and the fuel system had been rebuilt. The tractor ran pretty decent but was very sluggish and had low power. I did the normal checks and found the camshaft timing to be out of whack. I believe the JD manual says to set it to .025-.035 and the closer that you are to .025 the better. At the time I talked to a guy that worked on these units when they were new and he gave me a different spec. I can't remember if it was lower or higher than .025-.035. I set it to his spec and the tractor was a powerhouse. Has anyone out there changed the cam timing to increase power?? If so what is thew magic spec?
