it seems on my last plowing/discing session that the solenoid shorted and engaged the starter at some point. it started smoking when i shut the tractor down.

got the starter off and inspected it and it had some white "calcification" looking char on the center post and one of the very worn brushes even came off in my hand as i removed the center portion.

Question is, how do you tell if its worth spending the time rebuilding? IE is there a go/ no go check before i spend time replacing the brushes with a rebuild kit?

also, any suggestions or tips for the rebuild process?

Thanks,

Cam

Been years since I have done this so I hope I remember right. You can ohm it out. Check the armature and test each little strip for grounding. Also check each brush for grounding. Or should I say each wire going to the brushes

Cam.........starter solenoids are pretty robust but its real eazy to kick and GROUND the wire from the little middle screw that goes to the BIG starter thumb button by the tranny shifter. This will unfortunately cause yer starter motor to continuously turn and iff'n yer starter motor bearings are BAD, will cause wear on yer brushes. Byte the bullet, and buy a rebuilt starter motor with NEW CLUTCH style Bendix drive. ........HTH, Dell
