M-5 Generator wireing

My M-5 Diesel that I rebuilt after I saved it from the scrap yard had a generator and regulator on it but no belt so I finally got around to putting a new belt on but I have no wire from the starter terminal, just a stub. How do I wire this to try to see if it will charge? The wire harness seem complete from the regulator to the back of the dash so where should a wire from the started be hooked into? Maybe the amp gauge or what would be the proper way to connect it all up? There is no solenoid because they use the kick starter on these. Also I have no ignition or key to turn everything on the dash on so I suppose I will need to install that first or at some point.
Thanks for any ideas.

A (armature) on regulator to A on generator
F (field) on regulator to F on generator
L (load) on regulator to hot side of lights and ignition switch
BAT on regulator to one side of ammeter. Other side of ammeter to hot battery cable at the starter switch. (your stub?)

If no L terminal on regulator switches connect to generator side of ammeter.

Polarize generator by momentarily jumpering from A on gen or reg to BAT on regulator. You can go from A post on generator if more convenient, but touch the nut or wire connector, NOT screw threads. Arcing can damage the threads.

A terminal on regulator may be on bottom side of the case.

Not sure if this pertains you yours but what brand of generator is on it? Delco or Prestolite? I was told on my one M5 that has the Prestolite generator that they are a "B" circuit unit, so if you end up needing a regulator it might be different than the Delco ones. That is what my electrical shop had told me.

Thanks for the help on the connections, I'll go check as to the brand of generator, it does appear to still be the original one since it is painted brown yet like the rest of the engine etc.

Virgil has given you very good advice. However if it has a Prestolite and it is a B circuit dis-reguard the instruction on how to polarize it. Let us know what you have.
