256 rake gearbox update

posted about welding the cracked gearbox a few days ago. Took it apart and another piece fell off. Nice rake so decided to bite the bullet a get a new one. The owners manual says to keep the gearbox full to a certain point with 140 gearlube. but going to the IPB on the Nh parts site, printed across the picture of the gearbox it says use grease not oil. The casting is the same except its not drilled and tapped for the fill plug. must have had too many run dry. I put a grease fitting in the cover so it shoots onto the gear. I saved the old casting and will try to weld it sometime. Probably like plowboy suggested heating it first. I remember seeing the blacksmith weld big cast gears by heating them in the forge, welding them hot, and then burying them in lime to cool. Arlen thanks for the offer of your spare casting . One of your neighbors will probably need it, or if you got rid of it, 2 weeks later you'll need it yourself.

Just had my gearbox on my 256 rebuilt. Rake was to good to do anything different. Cost was $700.00 and change and 2 hours labor. Was told to put cornhead grease in. 4 tubes and run it and then add one more. Hoping for lots of acres out of it.

I ran 56 and 256 rakes in New Zealand for donkeys years and always ran 90 gear oil in them and never a problem. Quite independantly had to watch for water getting in if out in the rain a bit. Water went to bottom of box and the bearing suffered.

Equally important is slow cooling after welding. Local blacksmith wraps cast in fiberglas insulation. Easy to find product.

I had leaky seals in mine. Drilled and tapped oil plug to take a grease fitting. Have had no problems in over 5 years. A new Holland haybine also had bad seals in the gear box. Did the same thing and have run that for over 20 years, knock on wood. I'm not shy about taking these things apart and fixing what needs be. But I know there's a reason those seals have leaked (worn shaft or loose bearings/bushings). So, this little cheat has saved me time and money. Will it eventually catch up with me(worn gears/ bearings)? Maybe, but so will running the box dry. It's interesting that they now call for grease in that gear box.
