Massey Ferguson 12 baler

I have a massey Ferguson baler and the needles need to be
timed. The like about 2 inches being retracted before the
plunger hits the stops. Can I undo the chain for the needles
and knotters and spin it and reconnect the chain so that the
plunger just misses the stop before its retracted. Thanks

Tighten ALL chains, then follow the timing instructions on the side of the packer shaft. There is ONE bolt on the drive sprocket that is moved to time the machine.

If the chains are loose things will slam to an abrupt halt. Learned the hard way.

The chain adjustment is for setting the packer finger to plunger timing. Get this wrong and the plunger will strike the fingers and bend them and other parts.

Needles are adjusted by the bolts that clamp them to swing arm to set then clearance between the needle and twine holder disc. The connecting rod between the swing arm and needle drive arm sets the distance the needle extend past the twine holder disc at maximum travel.

After making the above adjustments, you can check and adjust the plunger safety stop.

I would suggest besides making sure the chains are tensioned properly, check the plunger to packing finger timing. This may correct you needle timing as this adjustments also sets the timing for the knotter.
