So last week I purchased a 1968 case 155. It's in decent shape for its age, runs and drives good the hydrostatic seems to be strong when going up hill but free wheels when going down hill. Is this normal? can it be fixed? I know nothing about these case tractors, I bought this one because I have never seen one for sale before and I'd like to get it in good operating condition.

Con Grat's on the purchase, they are not a hydrostatic machine ( I know it says that on the hood) The Case machines are Hydraulic drive, and yes it is normal to free wheel down hill, you control the speed with the control lever just just smooth motions and do not jerk the control lever, with this type of system you can use hyd power to power things like tillers auger ect, where a hydrostatic unit is not able to do anything other than power the wheels, ( some used power from the charge pump to have hyd lift) Again enjoy your new buy as you now have one of the best built machines of the day

Wait for Tom Arnold to show up. He can tell you Anything you want to know. According to him there is a modification that came out to fix the freewheeling problem. I have one of those beasts. they are pretty awesome. The one I have is powered by a 16hp Kohler. Monster.

I have a 1965 Colt Deluxe that is the same basic tractor, take it out and drive it some and you will learn how to feather the controls when going down hill. When you get used to the way it works you will find it is a fun little tractor.

yep, Case Nutty is correct, the 155's were all the same, and there is no "fix" for the free wheeling, that is a normal operation of the hydraulic drive. The holding valves came out in the late 70's as an option. they were never used on the 100 series

Thanks for the knowledge guys! Sorry it took me so long to get back here. I have a mower deck for it. I hope to get it fixed up so I can mow with it some. It fits well in my collection of 60's and 70's cubs, a few 110 and 112 deeres and a Ford lgt120.
