old tractor will not go forward but will go in reverse. when going forward goes about 1 foot then sounds like i broke a key. any help? thanks

Sounds like you have diagnosed the problem. I would say there IS a good chance that a key may be broken somewhere. Problem is finding just where. Pull the rear wheels and see if either may have a bad key. If not, could be in the transmission, or elsewhere. Kinda like hide and seek. Good luck.

If it is jerking/slipping/thumping when going forward, its probably in the transmission.

You can maybe get lucky and it will just be a belt or a front transmission mount broken or missing bolts, but more likely its in the transmission. Especially if its a model where you push a pedal to 'go'.

Best to replace the transmission with a new one if you really like the mower. I know they are expensive.
If you get another used transmission, you probably will install someone else's problem in your mower.
